The livestock industry is one of the biggest polluters of greenhouse gas emissions causing the effects of climate change to accelerate. In addition, livestock production uses around 35% of all the available cropland and 20% of all the available freshwater for feed production. Moreover, animals are treated and slaughtered in inhumane manners and are stuffed with vaccines to prevent diseases from spreading easily.
‘BETSIE. believes it is time for a change!’
BETSIE. wants to drastically change this production process of conventional meat and wants to contribute to a more healthy and sustainable balance between people, planet and animals. We were the first store in the Netherlands to sell sustainable cultured meat, thereby contributing to our vision. BETSIE. opened its first store in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on the 5th of April 2021. We will work together with a carefully picked supplier of cultured meat, to make sure our products are truly environmentally and animal friendly.
Our name originates from Betsie, the first cow that was so kind to give us her stem- and muscle cells. Currently, she is enjoying her freedom and every once in a while will give us more of her cells. Soon enough, Betsie will not be the only happy cow and she will have many friends jumping around.
